St. Johns, MI
Clinton County Dairy Committee will be hosting a Dairy Quiz Bowl contest for any interested Michigan youth. Our goal is to give dairy kids the opportunity for continued learning in the dairy industry.
The event will take place Wednesday, July 14th at 9:30am at the Agro Liquid Research Station just north of St. Johns, MI (5605 Findlay Rd. St. Johns, MI 48879) Entry forms are included and must be completed and returned by June 18th, 2021.
We will be following all covid related guidelines that are required at the research facility. Contest will take place in tents with open sides and two tables on each side for teams to space six feet apart. There will be another area for teams to gather that is large enough to social distance. Hand sanitizers will be available throughout the area and will be used on buzzers and tables in between each round. Mask wearing is also encouraged.
All contestants and coaches will be provided with a pizza lunch, cold milk/water and ice cream treats after the contest is over. Prizes will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams in each division! Contest questions and the seeding test given to Junior and Senior team members will come from the resources listed below with an emphasis on reproduction and genetics. Questions will be organized and kept secure until the contest.
Each county may enter one or more Novice, Junior or Senior teams. Age on January 1st, 2021 is 8-11, Novice, 9-14 Junior and 15-19 Senior. Senior team members must NOT have completed any animal science classes at the collegiate level to be able to participate. Any individuals from a county that would like to participate can enter and be assigned a team on the day of the contest. Counties with an odd number of contestants will be paired up with other counties that also have an odd number to make complete teams. A three- person team can also participate.

RULES and PROCEDURES
Junior and Senior members will take a 30-question multiple choice written test which will be used for seeding. In each round, correct questions from the seeding test for each team member (five questions per round, five points per question) will be added to each team score and announced at the end of the round.
Round A: Each round for each division will start with true and false questions- 4 for Novice and 8 for JR. and SR. Questions will be worth two points. Questions can be reread once. Answer must be started within 10 seconds. Deduction of two points if no answer given. Round B: Toss-Up questions, 12 for Novice, 14 for Junior and 16 for Seniors. Questions in this round will be worth five points. Must buzz in within 10 seconds and answer started within 5 seconds of being recognized. Bonus Questions will be given when a team has three different members answer a question correctly. Correct questions can accumulate for a team member. There will be NO deductions for incorrect answers. After buzzer pushed and moderator recognizes team member, they have 5 seconds to answer. If no answer is given, then 5 points will be deducted. If question is answered incorrectly the other team can buzz in within 10 seconds. Question cannot be reread unless moderator had not finished the entire question. Once answer is given member cannot offer any explanation. Moderator will stop reading question when a contestant buzzes in. They can only finish reading question if first answer is wrong, then they can reread question for the other team. If round ends in a tie, three additional toss-up questions will be asked. This can be repeated once and then just one more sudden death question will decide the round. Moderator and judges will have final say on answers. A coach can challenge twice during a round but only once per question. Let’s be respectful of the people who have volunteered to help with our contest. Team members can ask for an explanation on any question. This a double elimination contest so each team will be able to compete in two rounds. The only negative points given are if a contestant buzzes in and answers without being recognized by the Moderator. The Novice division will be given two free passes per contest on being recognized. The other negative point situation is when you buzz in and forget to say something. So please say the word, ice cream, if you have a brain freeze. |
